Reinhard von Müsel and Siegfried Kircheis attend Karl von Reifeisen's funeral, where Reinhard observes Moritz von Haase's emotionless eulogy. Reinhard discusses the Imperial populace's four-century repression with Kircheis before learning of his father Sebastian von Müsel's death. He attends Sebastian's funeral with Kircheis and briefly meets his sister Annerose von Grünewald. Upon returning to their alma mater, they discover a top student has been murdered. After examining the scene, Kircheis suspects Haase is color-blind and may have committed the murders to hide this defect.
