Reinhard von Müsel and Siegfried Kircheis reside in their former school's dormitory while investigating the death of Karl von Reifeisen. On their first night, Reinhard experiences dreams regarding past events. The following day, the pair examine the murder scene and review the deceased's school records. They subsequently interview Moritz von Haase, a student assigned by the principal to assist, regarding the conduct and personality of Karl von Reifeisen to find clues about his demise. Despite these efforts, the investigation yields no progress or breakthroughs in solving the case by the end of the day.
