Takano reveals Hinamizawa was once Onigafuchi, where the Shrine God's Sacrifice Ritual requires victims to sink into the marsh, leading Shion to suspect Satoshi is there. Later, Mion visits Shion, revealing she removed her own nails to share the burden. The narrative jumps one year to the Wataganashi Festival, where Keiichi reminds Shion of Satoshi. Subsequently, Shion, Keiichi, Takano, and Tomitake enter the shrine. After the festivities, Shion overhears Mion and her grandmother discussing Takano and the police investigations, uncovering more about the town's troubling history.
