Hajime theorizes that two individuals orchestrated the deaths of Dr. Kaitsu and Gouzou, using the Kaitou Gentleman to divert suspicion. He deduces that a portrait of a daughter was sent to an exhibition to force Gouzou to acknowledge her existence, thereby allowing Sakura entry into the mansion. However, the presence of the Southern Cross in the painting indicates it was created by a ghost painter in Okinawa, not Gouzou. Dr. Kaitsu acted as an accomplice, but they drugged the artist and sent him to an Okinawa hospital, where he subsequently died. Accusing Sakura with assistance from butler Komiyama, Hajime learns she committed the murders because her father, Nobuhiko Izumi, was the ghost painter. Before arrest, Sakura takes her own life and confesses her feelings for Hajime.
