Hajime accuses Detective Akechi of being the murderer, but Akechi proves he is not Redrum and reveals he is investigating a thirty-year-old crime. Hajime discovers a ring in the fireplace and deduces that Redrum is actually the mystery novel writer, Kahoru Takigawa. She confesses to the killings, explaining that the three victims were responsible for the death of her lover, Kyoji Sayama, twenty-nine years ago. This tragedy occurred during a disagreement after the group of five had carried out a large robbery. Takigawa sought revenge for the loss of Kyoji Sayama, leading to the recent murders that have come to light during the current investigation.
