Chief Otter investigates James Wolf, a former Special Air Service staff sergeant skilled with military knives. In Whitechapel, James saved Clare from three Corsican mafia members and killed Robin from Mayfair. In Earl's Court, he previously killed Paul Sparrow, a heroin smuggler. Otter confirms with Colonel Fox that James is the culprit after leaving the Special Air Service for attacking a colleague. James shelters Clare, who worked for Corsican boss Leon Hannah. Revealed as a cocaine addict, Clare is the subject of James's offer of 300,000 pounds for her freedom. Fox summons Keaton, who recalls James as his former instructor. James left the Special Air Service to care for his daughter Karen Wolf. James asks Clare to meet him at a Southport inn. Keaton learns Paul cut James out of cocaine smuggling to work with the Corsican mafia. At an Ilford estate, Keaton and Otter visit sponsor Lord Swan, who ignores warnings about James. Otter triggers a laser alarm while following Keaton. Surrounded by Corsican guards and Dobermanns, Keaton resolves the confusion, allowing both men to leave unharmed.
