Keaton Survives Desert Abandonment After Archaeological Excavation Tragedy
Jun 21, 1999Taichi Hiraga-Keaton visits an archaeological site in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region led by Professor Takakura. He meets Sheikh Karim Muhammad and his son Abdullah Abbas, who opposes the excavation of a sacred wall dedicated to the hero Sadiq. Despite Keaton's objections, the wall is dug up, causing Muhammad's death. Abbas abandons Keaton, Takakura, Yamamoto, Collins, and Harney in the desert. Keaton uses survival skills to create shade, catch food, and manage waste. He leads the group to safety, predicting Abbas will not pursue them if they survive. After four days and two miles, Abbas finds Keaton alive and orders his men to provide water, honoring him as a legendary hero.

Jul 23, 1999In Leipzig, former Olympic swimmer Karl Neumann lives in an abandoned building with Yugoslav refugees. He gives his gold medal to a boy named Eliah and defends the group from nationalist skinheads. When the skinheads return, they expose Neumann’s past doping at the 1988 Summer Olympics to beat rival Thomas Wenner. Keaton, who was hired by Wenner to find Neumann, arrives with the refugees to chase the attackers away using icicles. Neumann reveals his muscle fatigue stems from the drugs. Although Wenner arrives, Neumann has already left with Eliah. Eliah falls into the river after dropping the medal, and Neumann dives in to save him. Neumann drowns but is revived by Wenner. He decides to remain with the refugees and builds a snowman with Eliah.

Aug 21, 1999Keaton learns that Stefan Razin’s bodyguards, Dmitri Donskoi and Vladimir Kovalenko, were murdered using improvised weapons. Stefan hires Keaton for protection as he investigates the killer, identified by Captain West as the KGB operative Red Wind. Keaton discovers that Stefan, Mikhail, and Nikolai once made a pact to become gentlemen after writing love letters to their teacher Natalya Raskolnikov. Keaton deduces that Mikhail is Red Wind and that Stefan betrayed their bond by pursuing economics reform. Mikhail captures Keaton and accuses Stefan of killing Nikolai years ago. During a confrontation at a hotel stairwell, Stefan and Mikhail both die, having each technically violated their childhood promise to Nikolai.

Sep 22, 1999On a stormy day in Formentera, Sendel handcuffs himself to a briefcase and discards the key into the sea. Keaton discovers an ornamental seashell, deducing that oriental agriculture reached the island roughly 7,000 years ago. Sendel asks Keaton to discreetly observe Velasco, the mistress of a nearby mansion, at a restaurant. Keaton concludes that Velasco is unhappy with his fortunate lifestyle. Sendel recounts his involvement in the Spanish Civil War fifty years ago, where he fought alongside Russian spies Tomski and Alexeyev. The three became friends during a fireworks celebration but later betrayed each other. It is revealed that Tomski is actually Velasco, while Alexeyev was a fugitive for forty years. Sendel received the briefcase from Alexeyev, which contained a message to keep his pocket watch if he did not return. Although the briefcase holds a bomb, Sendel changes his mind due to Keaton’s positive outlook. Keaton unlocks the handcuffs with tweezers, allowing the bomb to detonate safely on the beach. Sendel finds closure by remembering the fireworks display, finally pardoning his past.

Douglas, who developed myopia as a boy due to his passion for drawing, now forges works for income after his original sketches failed to earn money. He once felt confident after forging a Vincent van Gogh piece but suffered nightmares of wandering a strange forest until dreaming of a mountain path, inspiring his Scottish Highlands sketch. Keaton creates a distraction using a charcoal-filled light bulb inside a bust, causing an explosion that injures Morris. As they flee with the sketch, Clifford shoots Douglas, miraculously restoring his eyesight before destroying the artwork. Keaton and Douglas incapacitate Clifford and escape the burning building.

A doctor reveals Seidel was a war veteran with a burn mark. Heinen states Seidel lacked the scent of death. Ascott recalls a man with an umbrella watching Seidel. The doctor confirms the burn was on the inner right arm. Wagner remembers a distinct peach scent at death. Heinen walks his dog Kurt and finds the man with a gas gun containing potassium cyanide under the umbrella. Kurt dies from fumes. Keaton chases the man, identified as Johan Kurten. Keaton finds a painting knife and learns from detectives that Matsui may be linked to Francesco Meda, a Red Brigades terrorist. Moralli attacks Keaton with a cinquedea at the Serravalle Duomo ruins, but Keaton is knocked out by Matsui. The detectives discover Moralli and Meda are the same person, targeting Matsui for a 400 million lira insurance claim. Keaton escapes the ruins, defeats Meda when Matsui refuses to sign over the will, and witnesses Matsui’s regret over an unfinished painting for his mother before Meda’s arrest.

Bus driver Christopher "Chris" Watkins predicted Keaton would become a master of life and warned him about local resentment toward wealthy outsiders. Keaton clashed with boys Dean, Ralph, and Phil, who were jealous of his stay at his grandmother's summer house. Chris once ejected a disruptive couple and a smoker named John from the bus. He showed Keaton a spot at Land's End where the sea sparkled red. Later, the boys invited Keaton to cross Bodmin Moor, despite Dean throwing out his water canteen. Keaton found water in an ancient tomb, forcing them to stay overnight. The next morning, the boys' mothers were relieved, but Dean accused Keaton of coercion. Chris arrived to vouch for Keaton and return him home. Chris took Keaton back to Land's End, where the sea sparkled green. In the present, Keaton reveals to Yuriko that Chris, the father of Dean, remarried his ex-wife Carol. Keaton still remembers the unforgettable color of the sea.

Scotland Yard requires concrete evidence before acting, so Yuriko and Sachiko track Helmer to a harbor shed and retrieve the bag. Sachiko reveals that Paul Wilkins, a British entomology professor from Marlow, stayed at her family’s guest house fifty years ago after fainting nearby. Her father had discarded Paul’s letters, suspecting him of being a spy. Upon arriving in Marlow, they cannot locate Paul immediately. Yuriko hangs the gift, a carp streamer, on a clock tower. Paul sees it from his hospital window and reunites with Sachiko, who decides to remain in Marlow with him.

He is confronted by Chinese gunrunners seeking Mei Lin, a Malayan tiger nurtured by Pai Li. Pai Li’s father died after the Red Dragon mafia confiscated his shop and debt. Although the mafia legally sold Mei Lin to Japan, Taihei and Pai Li rescued the tiger and hid in an abandoned warehouse. Taisuke inadvertently leads the Red Dragon to the hideout. Keaton, Taihei, and Pai Li set booby traps, but the mafia boss takes Pai Li hostage. Mei Lin attacks the boss, leading to the mafia's arrest. Keaton deduces the group intended to smuggle Tokarev pistols hidden under the floorboards. Consequently, Keaton misses his scheduled interview.

James explains a childhood incident involving an injured rabbit to Keaton. Despite Corsican mafia guards warning Hannah to only capture Clare, she plans to kill James. James had previously murdered his partner Paul for selling drugs to Karen. Keaton and James infiltrate the estate at night, bypassing Dobermanns and guards. Keaton rescues Clare, and James kills Hannah while wounding his arm. Otter arrests financier Swan at a dock. James says goodbye to Keaton as snow falls. Clare sees a white rabbit in the inn, noting its courage to fight when cornered.
