Keaton learns that Stefan Razin’s bodyguards, Dmitri Donskoi and Vladimir Kovalenko, were murdered using improvised weapons. Stefan hires Keaton for protection as he investigates the killer, identified by Captain West as the KGB operative Red Wind. Keaton discovers that Stefan, Mikhail, and Nikolai once made a pact to become gentlemen after writing love letters to their teacher Natalya Raskolnikov. Keaton deduces that Mikhail is Red Wind and that Stefan betrayed their bond by pursuing economics reform. Mikhail captures Keaton and accuses Stefan of killing Nikolai years ago. During a confrontation at a hotel stairwell, Stefan and Mikhail both die, having each technically violated their childhood promise to Nikolai.
