Heizo Hartwell recommends Richard to the Dufour family, including Zelda, Zoe, Mitchell Gray, Butler Weathersbee, and Roland, who is engaged to Nancy Nesbit. Their mission is to locate Gerard's first love. Harley appears, upsetting Conan. During Gerard's birthday party, Mitchell claims Roland attacked him with a knife. Richard sees a figure resembling Roland biting a knife below the balcony. They find Mitchell dead, impaled on a fence with a hand wound. Authorities recover Roland's body from a fountain after a two-day search. While officials rule Roland's death a suicide via poison from a past fire, Conan suspects both men were murdered by the same individual.
