Stygas Walfulcot, known as the Forgemaster, hosts Richard, Rachel, and Conan for a weekend visit. They encounter his students Artie Stonewall, Sammy Hammerstoltz, and Otto, along with his daughter-in-law Margery, who accidentally damages his latest work. After a party where the incident is forgiven, Margery is discovered hanging in the storeroom the following morning. Conan detects foul play by observing that the floor is dirty while Margery’s feet remain clean. He persuades Inspector Meguire to agree with his assessment, leading them to believe the killer is nearby.
