Disciples from Cloud Recesses travel to Biling Lake to exorcise recently appeared water ghouls. They stop at Caiyi Town, where locals do not recognize the corpses, puzzling the group. Wei Wuxian proposes harvesting the lake's resentful energy to fight the ghouls, but Jiang Cheng stops him by threatening to copy more passages. Wei Wuxian finds a ghoul under Lan Wangji's boat, impressing Lan Xichen. The Waterborne Abyss attacks, capsizing boats. Wei Wuxian saves a disciple but is dragged into the water, encountering resentful energy closely. Lan Wangji rescues him before harm occurs. With the threat resolved, the disciples begin suspecting the Wen sect's malicious intent.
