While Wei Wuxian proceeds to exact revenge on the Mo Family as requested, he encounters the new generation of the Lan sect and becomes involved in a zombie mystery. Meanwhile, the Wen sect creates trouble for the Lan sect as dangerous water ghouls are driven into Gusu’s waters.

During the event, Wen Chao harasses Wen Ning, prompting Wei Wuxian to defend his friend’s abilities despite Wen Ning’s nervous failure. Later, Wen Chao violently attacks a disciple who insults him, but Lan Wangji intervenes to save the victim. Wei Wuxian observes Lan Wangji’s headband is actually slanted and attempts to fix it, only to remove it entirely. This enrages Lan Wangji, who departs early. Wei Wuxian wins first place while Lan Wangji places fourth, leaving Jiang Cheng jealous and the Wen clan leader displeased.

The Wen sect dispatches disciples to Qishan as hostages, confiscating their swords and forcing them to locate a night-hunting cave under threat of having their Golden Cores melted by Wen Zhuliu. Wei Wuxian offers to carry the injured Lan Wangji, who refuses. During the search, Wei Wuxian protects Mianmian from Wen Chao, allowing Wang Lingjiao to witness the act. When Mianmian is targeted as bait, disobedient disciples shield her, leading Wen Chao to order their deaths. The ensuing battle awakens the beast. Amidst the chaos, Wang Lingjiao tries to brand Mianmian, but Wei Wuxian intervenes and receives the brand on his chest instead.

Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng dive in to locate the exit, but Wei Wuxian accidentally wakes the creature. He stays behind to distract it with a flame array while others flee. Su She accidentally shoots Wei Wuxian, weakening him and attracting the beast with blood. Lan Wangji rescues Wei Wuxian, but the tunnel collapses, leaving escapees vulnerable to Wen attackers. After resting for three days, they confront the Tortoise of Carnage using the Killer String Technique. Wei Wuxian lures the beast into the water, where he is drawn to a resentful sword and swallowed. Together with Lan Wangji, they kill the monster, but Wei Wuxian sinks unconscious as the sword disappears.

Wei Wuxian tears out and smashes Wen Zhuliu’s golden core before revealing his identity. Lan Wangji warns him about the dangers of demonic cultivation and offers to take him back to Gusu, but Wei Wuxian fails to perceive the kindness. After Lotus Pier is retaken, Wei Wuxian forges the Stygian Tiger Seal from an iron sword. Sixteen years later, he wakes in the Cloud Recesses and finds hidden wine. Lan Sizhui and Lan Jingyi invite him to dinner, recalling the Siege of the Nightless City. Wei Wuxian laughs at his donkey Little Apple attacking rabbits and shares a look of affinity with Lan Wangji.
