Manji and Rin visit Master Sori to recruit him against the Ittou-ryuu. Rin reveals she knows he is a shogunate spy, but he claims he only supports the regime to study forbidden Western art. Offended, Manji leaves. Later, Ittou-ryuu followers attack Sori’s home. Manji is trapped, and Sori, needing a specific red shade for his art, is delighted by a drop of blood. Rin fights a follower but is saved when Sori kills the attacker. The remaining attackers are executed by Anotsu for breaking the one-on-one rule. Sori notes his similarity to Manji and pays Rin for providing the color for his masterpiece.
