Jul 14, 2008Manji visits a priest to confess to killing his lord and one hundred retainers. The priest, bounty hunter Johnny Gyobutsu, shoots Manji in the forehead, but Manji regenerates and kills Johnny. Manji returns home to Yaobikuni, who placed sacred bloodworms in him to grant immortality, and his sister Machi, who has regressed mentally. Machi dreams of Manji killing her husband, a police officer. She wanders off and is captured by ronin led by Hishiyasu Shido, Johnny's brother. Hishiyasu kills Machi, prompting Manji to slaughter the entire ronin group. Manji declares his intent to seek redemption by killing one thousand evil men. The episode ends with a woman at a grave swearing revenge.

Rin Asano seeks Manji's aid to destroy the Ittou-ryuu after revealing her family's tragic history.
Jul 28, 2008Rin Asano prays at her father's grave, revealing her quest for revenge against the Ittou-ryuu to Yaobikuni. Yaobikuni directs her to Manji, while the Mugai-ryuu debates his allegiance. Rin attempts to persuade Manji to help defeat the Ittou-ryuu, but he demands to know which side is just. She recounts the destruction of the Mutenichi-ryuu by Kagehisa Anotsu and the Ittou-ryuu. Kagehisa explains that fifty years prior, his grandfather Saburou Anotsu and Rin's grandfather Takayoshi Asano competed for the dojo license. Bandits interrupted the match; Takayoshi killed four, and Saburou killed eight. Saburou was expelled for using a foreign blade. Later, the Ittou-ryuu seized the dojo, leading to the murder of Kurose and the stabbing of his wife, who was saved from violation by Sabato Kuroi. Manji agrees to assist Rin, though Yaobikuni questions who will save whom.

Aug 11, 2008At a riverbank, Sabato Kuroi confesses his eternal love for Rin, claiming it mirrors the manner in which he killed her mother. Manji intervenes, teaming up with Rin to subdue Kuroi. Upon exposure, Kuroi’s shoulders bear the severed heads of his former wife and Rin’s mother. He fatally strikes Manji, then offers his own life for Rin’s as proof of devotion. Before Rin can take her own life, Manji revives and stabs Kuroi. Enraged by this immorality, Kuroi attempts to kill Rin but is slain by Manji. Manji reminds Rin of her primary goal: preventing Anotsu from seizing control of the dojo. Meanwhile, Anotsu speaks with Kagimura Habaki and accepts a wager to unite various fighting styles into a single group.

Manji and Rin seek Master Sori’s help for revenge against Ittou-ryuu.
Aug 25, 2008Manji and Rin visit Master Sori to recruit him against the Ittou-ryuu. Rin reveals she knows he is a shogunate spy, but he claims he only supports the regime to study forbidden Western art. Offended, Manji leaves. Later, Ittou-ryuu followers attack Sori’s home. Manji is trapped, and Sori, needing a specific red shade for his art, is delighted by a drop of blood. Rin fights a follower but is saved when Sori kills the attacker. The remaining attackers are executed by Anotsu for breaking the one-on-one rule. Sori notes his similarity to Manji and pays Rin for providing the color for his masterpiece.

Sep 8, 2008Taito Magatsu of the Ittou-ryuu attempts to leave for a normal life, parting with his lover O-Ren. Rin asks Magatsu to sell her a Western sword, seeking the daughter of the Asano dojo in exchange. She explains the blade belonged to her father Kurose before the Ittou-ryuu raid. Magatsu is ambushed and stabbed by two men carrying him to the dojo but kills them. At the dojo, Anotsu informs Magatsu that the Ittou-ryuu will become a shogunate branch, but Magatsu insists on quitting. Manji sees Rin crying over her parents' death and decides to retrieve the sword. He confronts Magatsu in a forest, where Magatsu uses a three-section sword to defeat and stab Manji. Manji recovers enough to stab Magatsu, retrieves the sword components for Rin, and collapses.

Sep 22, 2008Kusano Kene, a secondary military officer of the Ittou-ryuu, rescues a geisha from harassment by her husband. He follows her to an okiya where she poisons him and shoots him in the head with a crossbow. Her disguise is removed to reveal Hyakurin, with her husband identified as Shinriji from the Mugai-ryuu. In another location, Giichi interrogates Morozumi Chogou, an Ittou-ryuu member, by holding him with a chained double blade. Giichi forces him to reveal the number of masters in the clan before beheading him. Meanwhile, Manji and Rin rest at an inn where Manji meets Eiku Shizuma. Shizuma proposes an alliance against Anotsu, but Manji refuses. Shizuma stabs Manji in the chest, and Manji simultaneously stabs Shizuma in the back, revealing Shizuma is immortal like him. Manji later realizes Shizuma’s dagger was poisoned when his sacred bloodworms fail to appear, causing him to cry out in pain as blood spews from fissures in his body.

Seeking medical help late at night, Rin encounters an old woman disguised as Yaobikuni who offers assistance. This encounter is a trap orchestrated by Shizuma to kidnap her. Shizuma returns the woman’s grandchild to her as part of a bargain, but then kills her, horrifying Rin. He recounts his past serving under a military commander two hundred years ago during the Sengoku period, where his entire unit and lord perished in battle, leaving him with nothing. Shizuma offers Rin blood that grants immortality, but Manji interrupts. The two engage in a fierce fight, and Manji rejects Shizuma’s second offer to overthrow Anotsu together. Shizuma poisons his sword again, but Rin creates a distraction, allowing Manji to impale Shizuma with the weapon. Dying, Shizuma reveals Anotsu is in Fukagawa. Rin concludes that immortality may only bring sadness rather than a solution.

Rin feels jealous when Manji leaves with Makie and attempts to seduce him, but he laughs at her clumsy efforts, causing her to hit him with a sake bottle. Later, Makie tells Anotsu she desires an ordinary life as a samurai’s daughter, which she believes is impossible. Anotsu confesses his love, but she doubts his motives. After he departs, three swordsmen arrive to take her back to her former brothel, but she kills them all.

Araya paints a mask with his own blood to gift to a young boy, revealing his past with the Ittou-ryuu before avoiding conflict when Renzo arrives. Later, a man blames Renzo for breaking a sandal. Rin defends him and offers to repair it, mentioning the Asano dojo, which prompts the man to mock her family name and attempt inappropriate contact. Rin fixes the sandal and accepts Renzo’s invitation to his home for tea, leaving her sword behind. Araya thanks her for helping Renzo, and when asked about her background, Rin begins recounting the murder of her parents two years earlier.

Kawakami then uses his blood to paint her body before attempting to strangle her. Manji arrives and duels Kawakami, disarming him. As Kawakami attacks the recovering Rin, Manji pierces his heart with a double-blade knife. Renzo returns, sees his father dead, and spears Manji. Manji lies, claiming he is chasing a gambling debt. Rin convinces Renzo that Manji is dead by showing him an arm buried in the ground. Later, Rin returns the arm, allowing Manji to re-attach it to his shoulder.

Manji points out that those responsible for her parents' deaths are already dead. Magatsu discovers O-Ren’s corpse and realizes her love, facing the inn-owner’s blame. Yaobikuni advises Rin that she must be strong and follow her own way rather than hesitate. Inspired, Rin abandons her doubts and trains with total devotion to become a swordsman. The Mugai-ryuu prepares for conflict against the Ittou-ryuu, which Habaki monitors. The episode concludes by showing the diverging paths of the surviving characters.
