Ohara proposes that the candidates prepare osechi dishes to demonstrate their suitability. Sumiko Senkichi, the daughter of the heya's former yobidashi, harbors feelings for Wakayoshiba and receives assistance from Yamaoka to prepare sweet kuromame for her entry. While the other candidates present lavish osechi, Wakayoshiba prefers Sumiko's homemade version and petitions Oyakata for permission to marry her. Oyakata initially declines the request, but his wife intervenes, asserting that the couple is well-matched and compelling Oyakata to approve the union.
