At a carnival, Ash and his companions meet Melvin, a magician whose skills are fading. Desperate to improve, he hypnotizes Ash and employs his Exeggcute to capture numerous Exeggutor. These Pokémon subsequently hypnotize themselves and Team Rocket, causing chaos that nearly destroys the venue. To halt the rampaging Exeggutor, the carnival owner sets a time bomb. Ash's Charmander launches flame attacks, allowing Melvin to successfully execute a fire magic trick that wakes the Exeggutor just before the bomb detonates. Following this event, Charmander unexpectedly evolves into Charmeleon.
