On the journey back to Pallet Town, Ash and his companions encounter a Mr. Mime attempting to flee from a circus trainer. Because the circus's existing Mr. Mime is overweight and unable to perform, the group decides to find a substitute. They opt to dress Ash in a costume to mimic the Pokémon. Concurrently, the escaped Mr. Mime arrives at the Ketchum residence, where Mrs. Ketchum mistakenly believes it is Ash.
