Giovanni, the Team Rocket leader, locates Mewtwo in a secluded part of the Johto region and attempts to recapture it. During this time, Ash and his companions are taken hostage by Domino, a new Team Rocket recruit, while attempting to save Pikachu from Jessie and James. Several cloned Pokémon are also captured and used as bait to lure Mewtwo. The conflict escalates into a struggle between Giovanni and Mewtwo, centered on control and purpose. Mewtwo also seeks to understand whether it and the clones have a meaningful role, despite being created through scientific means.
