He deepens his understanding of local traditions through interactions with new friends Mallow and Professor Kukui. Upon the conclusion of his holiday, Ash’s mother departs for home. Consequently, Ash chooses to remain in Alola to enroll as a student at the Pokémon School, marking a significant shift in his journey.

He competes in a balloon-popping game with Sophocles and Togedemaru, a land-and-water race against Lana’s Popplio, and a Tauros race with Kiawe. Professor Kukui then initiates a Pokémon battle, but Tapu Koko intervenes to challenge Ash directly. The legendary Pokémon urges Ash to attempt his first Z-Move, Gigavolt Havoc. During the execution, Pikachu releases a massive electrical surge that causes Ash’s Z-Crystal to shatter. Consequently, Ash resolves to complete an island challenge trial to obtain a replacement Z-Crystal.

When Pikipek steal Bewear’s food, the villains plot revenge. Ash shares his lunch with a hungry Rowlet and follows it to a Pikipek flock. He encounters Team Rocket capturing the birds in a net. Rowlet frees its friends and helps Bewear defeat the villains. Afterward, Rowlet joins Ash on his journey.
