Daigoro discusses lunar travel before being ambushed with his teacher Kaishu Katsu. Unknown assassins attack until student Tetsuma scares them off. Kaishu exiles Daigoro from the Katsu dojo for poor swordsmanship, prompting Kaoru to vow to teach him. Kaishu's daughter Itsuko and Tetsuma visit the Kamita dojo to retrieve Daigoro, but he refuses to leave. Itsuko decides to reside at the dojo instead. Kenshin departs to inform Kaishu that his daughter is staying at the Kamiya dojo. The narrative focuses on the interpersonal conflicts and training commitments arising from Daigoro's expulsion and Itsuko's decision to remain.
