As Kenshin prepares to leave, the Beni Aoi assassins reappear, a faction unknown to him. He returns to the Kamiya dojo to inform the others that Daigoro and Itsuko may remain, though Kaishu appears to miss them. Flashbacks reveal Kaishu was previously accused of funding an army during the Edo period. While Itsuko goes shopping for dinner ingredients, Kaoru accidentally causes a fire in the kitchen. The Beni Aoi tracks Itsuko and abducts her. Kenshin discovers her hairpin outside, and Kaishu receives a letter confirming the kidnapping.
