Ronja discovers Birk trapped behind rubble and recognizes his whistled tune. They briefly discuss their sibling-like bond before she flees upon hearing another presence. After enduring a lice combing from Lovis, Ronja returns underground with provisions. She finds Birk pale and thin, learning that the Borkas Robbers lack food until spring. Ronja gives him bread and milk, deciding to visit daily throughout winter. Despite their fathers' likely rage, the pair swear to keep their secret friendship hidden from their respective groups.
