In 1814, in Edo (modern-day Tokyo), a renowned but gruff artist in his mid-fifties, Tetsuzo, works in a cluttered home-studio, producing intricate artworks for clients across Japan. His third daughter from a second marriage, O-Ei, is a talented and outspoken 23-year-old who frequently paints in her father’s place, though without credit. Her artistic contributions often cause complications. Despite her skill, she remains in the shadow of her famous father, who later becomes known in Europe under the name Katsushika Hokusai and influences major Western artists. O-Ei’s role in his success is largely unknown today.
