Gergiev selects the cosmonaut and debates Irina's fate. Lyudmila intervenes, proposing that Irina be utilized as a political weapon rather than eliminated as rivals demand. Viktor announces Lev as the chosen cosmonaut, bringing him joy. He selects the callsign "Aster" to signal to Irina that he hopes she is doing well.
