Oscar receives a terminal tuberculosis diagnosis, requiring her to leave the military for a country estate to survive. Simultaneously, Andre discovers his impending blindness. As Company A engages armed citizens and Company B prepares for deployment, Oscar’s portrait as Mars is completed, though Andre cannot see it. He describes the painting using imagination, moving her to tears. Company B is ordered to suppress riots, prompting Oscar and Andre to prepare for departure to the guard barracks with General Jarjayes. Jarjayes warns Andre not to die, noting he would have permitted their marriage had Andre been noble. During their journey, the couple escapes an attack by rioters. That night, Oscar acknowledges Andre’s condition and attempts to send him away, but he refuses to leave her side. She finally confesses her love, and they consummate their relationship.
