A scientist named Professor Utonium and his son Ken experiment with Chemical X, which is altered when a mochi cake is accidentally added, creating Chemical Z. Ken directs a Chemical Z beam at a glacier in Tokyo Bay, causing black and white lights to spread. The black light transforms a zoo monkey into a monster named Mojo Jojo. The white light strikes three ordinary girls—Momoko, Miyako, and Kaoru—granting them the ability to become superheroes known as the Powerpuff Girls Z.
