In 2113, a scientific team travels to Antarctica to study unusual seismic activity and discovers massive land markings resembling the Nazca lines, with a large underground cavern beneath them. At the cavern's bottom, they find part of a towering structure engraved with a star chart. As one team member traces the chart, the tower emits a high-frequency sound that causes the team members to suffer and die. The Command Center, observing the event, also falls victim to the sound. Analysis reveals the frequency is a signal directed at Elysium, a planet outside Earth's solar system. Van, an 18-year-old pizza delivery boy in Manhattan, competes in turbo jai alai, a high-speed virtual reality sport. He is in love with Lydia, a ballerina, and hopes to win a race for two tickets to a galactic resort where she can audition. Meanwhile, the Odyssey, a deep space vessel, encounters alien ships from Elysium. A tragic incident leads to the destruction of the ambassador's ship, prompting a devastating Elysian attack on Earth. Van faces danger when his race is interrupted by the attack, and he fights to save Lydia from the collapsing stadium. As cities burn, they escape to a fallout shelter in Manhattan.
