Black Jack and Pinoko reach a remote African village searching for Dr. Kuma, only to discover villagers dying from a condition linked to the Phoenix disease. After meeting a local girl named Mary, they locate Dr. Kuma, who saves Mary’s mother before Jack collapses from a tsetse fly bite. Dr. Kuma rescues Jack and reveals his past as Dr. Honma’s apprentice during the Noir Project, where Zen Mantoku gathered specialists to study eternal life. Dr. Jorujyu created the B.O.P. virus to power artificial organs, but experimental use on live subjects caused Dr. Honma to resign. When Dr. Kuma tested B.O.P. on animals, the results initially seemed promising until both the animals and villagers began dying. After Dr. Kuma is severely injured by a black panther while protecting Pinoko and Mary, the villagers donate blood to save him. Jack then receives urgent news that his father is in a coma.
