Mrs. Leagan forces Candy to sleep in the barn, where she bonds with the horses and Klint. She attempts to conceal her living situation from Anthony, orphan John, and Sister Mary during an unexpected visit. Although Mrs. Leagan supports this deception, Candy’s bruised hands reveal the truth. Sister Mary recognizes Candy’s hardship and offers to take her home, but after meeting the Cornwell brothers, she concludes that Candy has found happiness through friendship. Fearing Anthony will reject her, Candy is relieved when he enters the barn to apologize for his previous behavior. He gives her a rose and promises a better gift for her next birthday in May.
