Candy and her raccoon Klint hitch a ride with Tom and Mr. Steave to Lakeweood. Mr. Steave warns her to be strong. Upon arrival, Neil and Eliza Leagan prank her. Mrs. Leagan clarifies Candy is a playmate, not family. Mr. Leagan is absent but believes Candy helps his children. Servant Dorothy fears Neil and cannot support Candy. Candy considers returning to Pony's home. However, she finds a portrait of her prince in her attic room. Dorothy reveals the prince spends his holidays nearby. This discovery convinces Candy to remain in Lakeweood despite the hostility.
