Miss Pony asks Candy to watch the orphans while she and Sister Mary attend a meeting. Candy tries to lead but notices Daisy, a new girl who stays inside. Candy encourages Daisy to climb a tree, where Daisy shouts happily before fainting. A frantic mailman delivering a letter from Annie demands Daisy be brought down immediately. Daisy has hemophilia, meaning even minor injuries can cause fatal bleeding. The next morning, Daisy climbs the tree alone and gets injured again. Although she loses significant blood, the doctor stops the bleeding. The other orphans pray for her recovery and include her in their games. Annie’s letter reveals that Saint Paul's Academy feels dull without Candy, and the Cornwell brothers miss her greatly.
