A weakened Mr. Cartwright asks Candy to convince Jimmy to become his adoptive heir. Jimmy respects the old man but prefers staying with Candy to care for Pony's Home, even rejecting his future for her. Candy consults Tom, who expresses happiness about being adopted by Mr. Steave and learning to be a rancher. Mr. Cartwright falls severely ill with the flu and is cared for by Candy. Witnessing the old man's weakness, Jimmy realizes his deep love for him and agrees to the adoption. Albert, Tom, Terry, and Jimmy have now chosen their destinies, while Candy remains in search of her own path.
