A New York map store owner refuses to sell original maps, preferring reproductions. His old friend, treasure hunter Ramos, is struggling financially. The owner complains about Ramos, who was formerly engaged to his daughter Marian, while celebrating the purchase of framed ancient map fragments. He subsequently collapses and is hospitalized. Ramos and Marian begin selling the antique maps, and Ramos discovers a fragment he suspects is a treasure map. He hires Fujita to repair it for fifty thousand dollars. While Ramos dreams of adventure, Marian considers marriage and attempts to destroy the map. Fujita determines the fragment is part of an ancient Archimedes mechanical planetarium, which holds value as a treasure itself. Ramos abandons the project to continue his treasure hunting, leaving Fujita to complete the restoration and visit the owner in the hospital.
