In January 792 UC, Reinhard von Müsel and Siegfried Kircheis transfer from the destroyer Hameln II to the Imperial Ministry of Military Affairs in Odin. Disappointed by clerical boredom and court corruption, Reinhard finds solace in visiting his sister Annerose von Grünewald. She reveals that her friend, Viscountess Dorothea von Schafhausen, faces a mining rights dispute with Count Herxheimer, a relative of Marquis Wilhelm von Littenheim. Herxheimer avoids civil litigation by challenging the Schafhausen family to a duel, using his influence to block professional fighters from defending them. Outraged by this injustice, Reinhard steps forward to fight the duel on Dorothea's behalf.
