Rumors of Reinhard von Müsel joining the duel circulate rapidly in Imperial high society. Both Count Herxheimer's agent and Reinhard engage in rigorous training. Reinhard finds the archaic flintlock pistols difficult to use effectively. His proficiency improves after an unexpected meeting with Cornelius Lutz, who offers guidance on handling these weapons. Concurrently, Sussanna von Beenemünde schemes to assassinate Reinhard during the event. She hires a professional killer for this purpose. The assassin challenges Herxheimer's agent to a duel and defeats him. This victory allows the assassin to replace the agent as the representative for Count Herxheimer in the upcoming duel.
