Reinhard von Müsel and Siegfried Kircheis are sent alone to investigate Free Planets Alliance activity on the planet Kapche-Lanka. Their superior orders this mission as a plot to kill them both. Before they leave, someone tampers with their tank to ensure it lacks sufficient fuel for the return journey. Night falls before the two officers discover the sabotage. Forced to stop, they must find a way to survive and reach base. They happen upon an Alliance tank advance unit. Deciding to secure the necessary fuel, they choose to ambush the enemy forces. This encounter becomes their only hope for survival after the deliberate attempt on their lives.
