Kohaku and Kagura conclude that eliminating The Infant is necessary to destroy Naraku. In response, Naraku dispatches Hakudoshi and Kohaku to force Kikyo out of concealment. Hakudoshi commands Kohaku to release a plague of rat demons from a shrine box across various villages, aiming to attract Kikyo. Inuyasha and his group recognize that Naraku is targeting Kikyo. Meanwhile, Kikyo conducts a myosei ritual to cultivate a special branch into a magical tree that pierces the clouds, drawing the rat demons to climb it. Kohaku struggles with the decision to close the shrine box to save lives, fearing that doing so would reveal to Naraku that he is recovering his memories. Sango confronts him regarding this conflict.
