After arriving at a new village, Shippo develops feelings for a young girl named Satsuki. She holds a shard of the Shikon Jewel, though it is actually a quartz fragment, and believes her deceased older brother will one day return. The following morning, her brother appears to have come back to life. However, Shippo quickly realizes that this returned figure is actually a lizard demon in disguise. Rather than exposing the deception to Satsuki, Shippo allows her to escape with the creature. He then confronts the lizard demon alone, easily defeating him in combat to protect the girl from the truth.
