Conan tranquilizes Mouri and identifies Shirou’s wife, Kyouko Shabata, as the culprit. He explains that the photograph concealed Shirou’s true dying message: his bloodied wedding ring in his right hand. Kyouko falsified the time of death by placing a morning newspaper next to a late-night meal and using a timed VCR to record a show. She is found holding the incriminating ring and confesses that Shirou’s gambling debts forced her to kill him. As she attempts suicide, Ikenami intervenes. Heiji and Kazuha arrive, revealing Ikenami is Heiji’s mother. Ikenami admits to Mouri that she wanted to observe his character after Heiji was injured during a previous stay.
