Conan identifies the culprit by noticing glass wool in the incinerator and deduces the grandfather clock was silenced by shifting the time twelve hours ahead while a stereo mimicked the chimes. He lures the suspect with cheese containing sleeping pills near a blue cushion. The motive was stealing a valuable diamond from Doyle's collar, which was weighted down by a pendulum in a reserved clock. Yoshio Tsunashima attempts to flee but is stopped by Arthur and Christie, eventually confessing to fund his care for abandoned dogs. Kanou declines to press charges and gifts the collar to Tsunashima. Later, Arthur is revealed to have moved Hasuki's shoes to keep her from leaving England, where she accepts Kanou's proposal to join him.
