Editor-in-chief Koizumi asks former delinquent Yamaoka to guide his son Norio, a junior high student neglecting exams for drinking and trouble. Yamaoka takes Norio to a bar where intimidating men and Inspector Nakamatsu discuss illegal drugs, frightening Norio into fleeing. Kurita suggests Norio’s rebellion stems from feeling neglected. Norio eventually returns to his studies. His mother brings him a meal prepared by his father, featuring rice porridge traditionally eaten by candidates for the Chinese Imperial examination. Upon returning the empty tray, Norio asks his father to prepare the porridge again, signaling reconciliation. Koizumi later thanks Yamaoka for the recipe at work.
