The Gym Leader, Rudy, becomes infatuated with Misty after she rescues his younger sister, Mahri, and moves in to court her. Ash feels jealous of Rudy’s advances while preparing for the Spike Shell Badge match. Misty faces a difficult choice between staying on the island with Rudy and Mahri or continuing her journey with Ash. Eventually, Rudy realizes that Misty’s heart belongs with Ash. He accepts their decision and acknowledges that Ash is lucky to have her. The group shares a respectful farewell as Rudy steps aside, allowing Ash and Misty to proceed with their travels without further conflict or romantic interference from the Gym Leader.
