After Ash discovers an egg that hatches into the Pokémon Togepi, multiple characters desire ownership of the new creature. To resolve the dispute, they organize a small tournament. Ash asserts his right to keep Togepi because he found the egg. He ultimately wins the competition. However, Togepi identifies Misty as its mother because she was the first being it saw upon hatching. Consequently, Togepi chooses to remain with Misty despite Ash's victory in the tournament.
