Usui confronts Saito as the group proceeds through Shishio's mansion. Saito tests Usui's claim to his heart's eye, revealing it is merely enhanced hearing compensating for blindness. He notes Usui's weakness, driven by revenge against Shishio, which has reduced him to a pawn. Enraged, Usui wounds Saito with a timbe shield to block his vision. Despite this, Usui cannot defeat Saito's Zeroshiki attack, a technique Saito had reserved for Kenshin.
