Ep. 46: Sanosuke Destroys Purgatory and Kenshin Faces Shishio's Solo Challenge
Aired on April 23, 1997

46
Sanosuke employs the Futae no Kiwami technique to deflect bullets and detonates bombs provided by Tsunan Tsukioka, severely damaging the Purgatory’s engine and creating a breach. The vessel eventually sinks after Kenshin, Sanosuke, and Saito evacuate safely. Shishio issues a challenge requiring Kenshin to reach his base by winning one-on-one fights. Meanwhile, the Oniwabanshuu, now led by Misao, intervene to prevent the Kyoto Grand Fire, thereby sparing Kyoto from destruction. This sequence concludes the immediate threat to the city while setting the stage for the final confrontation between Kenshin and Shishio under strict dueling conditions.
