Misao discloses the hidden history between Shougo and Lady Magdalia to Kenshin, Kaoru, and Yahiko. Shougo previously studied medicine to cure many, yet failed to save his dying sister after nonbelievers killed their parents. Meanwhile, the group observes Santo signaling an army formation from his boat. Lady Magdalia learns Kaiou possesses her medallion and searches his room, eventually realizing he intends to betray both her and Shougo. Sanosuke and Shouzo arrive to intervene against Kaiou but are outmaneuvered. Consequently, the trio is trapped in a cage as a massive avalanche of boulders crashes down upon them, sealing their fate in the ensuing chaos.
