Winter snow traps the Mattis Robbers in the castle, causing depression over endless shoveling duties. Ronja tries on new snow clothes and initiates a snowball fight with the group before resuming work. Mattis then gives Ronja his childhood skis. She ventures outside to practice, mastering their use over several days. During play, she falls and becomes stuck with her leg trapped, unable to free herself. Rumphobs appear, but because her foot pierced their roof and disturbed their underground home, they do not understand her plight and depart without assistance. Left immobilized in the cold, Ronja fears she will freeze to death alone.
