A red-haired boy named Birk Borkason introduces himself to Ronja, revealing he and his father Borka, along with twelve robbers, have taken over the castle as Borkas' Keep. The children exchange insults about their respective bandit families before Ronja attempts to leave. Birk leaps across the gap to her side, initiating a jumping contest. During the game, the ground collapses, causing Birk to fall over the edge. Ronja rescues him using her leather rope, and despite her scolding, Birk expresses gratitude. Later, Mattis becomes enraged upon learning that Borka has a son born on the same night as Ronja. The group stays awake in fear of an attack, while Ronja feels disappointed that her first new acquaintance belongs to the rival Borkas clan.
