Jul 11, 2014Following a plutonium theft in Aomori, Japan, during a snowstorm, masked teenagers calling themselves Sphinx 1 and 2 post a video warning that Tokyo will face darkness and sparks after 3:00 p.m. in Shinjuku. Six months later, they intervene when Lisa Mishima is bullied, assuming her classmates' identities at school. Frustrated at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, Lisa wishes everyone would disappear. The prefecture loses power, and the building is evacuated without her. Nine and Twelve place thermite explosives in stuffed animals under sprinklers. When Twelve is interrupted by Lisa, he gives her a bomb and flees, asking Nine whether to kill her. Nine decides to ask her directly. Lisa pleads for her life, prompting Twelve to extract her as the structure collapses. Nine photographs the destruction. Though unharmed, Nine informs Lisa that by choosing to live, she has become their accomplice, leaving her speechless.

Meanwhile, Twelve arrives at an amusement park to rescue Lisa, who is strapped with bombs on a Ferris wheel. Five disables the timer and cuts the power, trapping them midair, then dispatches police to the school where Nine is retrieving the device. Acknowledging her impending death, she expresses her love, asks him to live for them both, and kisses him before committing suicide by igniting gasoline. Nine hijacks airwaves to announce the bomb countdown has begun, unmasking as Sphinx for his final farewell.

Police track a balloon carrying the device, realizing hundreds of passenger flights are now stranded without power. Fighter jets fail to intercept the bomb as Nine observes the countdown. Twelve confesses his isolation to Lisa before the explosion occurs, creating an aurora and plunging the city into darkness. The next day, Nine visits the Settlement to honor deceased children, including Five, where he is joined by Twelve and Lisa. Shibazaki arrives, warning that surrendering will expose Project Athena. U.S. helicopters intervene, and soldiers kill Twelve despite Nine's threat involving another bomb. Nine dies after giving Shibazaki the detonator, urging him to remember Sphinx. One year later, Project Athena is exposed, and Lisa and Shibazaki visit the graves, learning that VON means hope.
