At Pony's Home, Candy mourns Anthony Brown's death until the bossy orphan Jimmy taunts her for crying. Seeing Miss Pony and Sister Lane raise funds for Christmas gifts, Candy realizes she has neglected the other orphans. Miss Pony encourages her to move forward, leading Candy to find Jimmy weeping at the base of Father Tree for his lost mother. Feeling equally alone, Jimmy challenges Candy to a race and tree-climbing contest to determine the true orphan boss. Candy wins the competition, overcoming her grief in the process. Meanwhile, Anthony's widowed father, Mr. Brown, visits the Ardley family to mourn. He asks Archibald and Alistear to gather Anthony's things and give them to Candy, expressing a desire to meet her someday.
